One of the most significant draws of acrylic roof coatings is the ease of application. It resembles paint in both consistency and in the way it’s applied to the surface. That means you don’t need any specialized tools or equipment to apply it. A paintbrush, roller or sprayer is all you need.

Applying acrylic coatings to your roof will result in a laundry list of benefits for your building. Added durability to the existing roof, UV protection from harmful rays, defense against extreme weather events, and rainwater, plus resistance to dirt and buildup keep your roof in tip-top shape. Another benefit is that they have minimal toxicity, carrying no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This benefits the environment, as well as your crew, as acrylic coatings carry only a small amount of risk to your health, similar to traditional house paint.

The Application Process for Applying an Acrylic Roof Coating

The most essential step to applying acrylic coating isn’t part of the application process at all. It’s the preparation. To help the coating adhere to the best of its ability, thoroughly clean the roof surface with a pressure washer. Remove the dirt, grease and oil to start with a clean, dry surface. If you notice any damaged areas when cleaning, repair them before you begin, too.

Regarding how to apply acrylic roofing systems — that part’s simple. The roofing materials come in cans, just like paint does, and looks just like paint, too. To begin, pour the coating onto a small section of the roof, and apply it using a brush, roller, sprayer or squeegee. Once that has dried, after 24 hours, apply a second coat. Consider applying the first and second coats in opposing directions to ensure full and complete coverage. Acrylic coatings are self-leveling, so the application doesn’t need to be perfect, as any streaking will smooth itself out during the curing process.

The roof restoration process is fast, straightforward and barely disrupts normal business operations. Unlike with a full roof replacement, there’s no need to close your store or halt activities while the work is being done. Another bonus? Cleanup is just as easy since acrylic coatings are water-based and can be cleaned up using water.

Complications only arise when the coatings are applied in cold, rainy or humid temperatures. If you avoid these circumstances, the acrylic coating will adhere correctly. Temperatures below 50 degrees are not suitable for acrylic coating applications. It will take much longer for the coating to dry completely and it may not properly adhere to the roofing substrate. Be aware that applying acrylic coatings on flat roofs is not recommended. It’s more suited for sloped roofs since ponding water will damage the coating.
